FCT members are all amateur enthusiasts who want to broaden their interest in fungi and to help with the conservation Mushrooms and toadstools as they come under increased threat from depletion of woodland. The group maintains the CATE2 fungi database.

The first society in the world entirely devoted to the study of lichens, it has many overseas as well as British members.
